The Wallaceburg Kinsmen are hoping to raise thousands of dollars for Cystic Fibrosis Canada at their inaugural Pumpkinfest event on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Eric Hancock, the Wallaceburg Kinsmen president and the event organizer, said proceeds from a silent auction and raffle will be supporting the cause.

“The silent auction we have includes a number of items… we have got something from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Windsor Spitfires, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and a number of local businesses,” he said. “So there will be the silent auction going on. Our hope is, we are closing the auction at 9 p.m., we are hoping at 10 p.m. to present a cheque to Cystic Fibrosis for over $10,000.”

Eric said for the raffle the Kinsmen have been fortunate enough to have some prizes donated.

“Tickets from West Jet, ticket for two anywhere they fly,” Eric said. “VIA Rail $250 voucher and a party basket worth $100 from Bob’s Animal Removal. And those tickets are $5 each, three for $10. Again you can get them from most Kinsmen, you can get them from the radio station downtown or you can get a hold of me if you want tickets. You certainly can buy them on the grounds that day. Cystic Fibrosis is running that raffle.”

Eric said he is excited that Cystic Fibrosis has been the charity of choice for Kin Canada now for over 40 years.

“We have raised over $42 million,” he said. “When we first joined up with them, if you had a child with cystic fibrosis you hoped to see them into kindergarten. A five year expectancy. As of last month we were advised that now the life expectancy is 50 and a half years. So now if you have a child with cystic fibrosis they can go to school, they can plan on going to college or university, they can plan on a career and they can plan on a family.”

Eric added: “That’s what gets me excited is the fact that we really make a difference. So by coming out to this, by buying a ticket or bidding on silent auction, that’s where our focus is. Along with the urban and rural connection, but also making a fun day for parents, grandparents, kids, any age group. We hope to have something for everyone.”
