Students in Wallaceburg’s Grade 7/8 program at WDSS have stepped up for some local children.

Michelle Freeburn, educational assistant at the school, told the Sydenham Current a toy drive was completed this week.

“The 7 and 8’s decided to take on some kids from the Salvation Army,” Freeburn said.

“They gave us a couple of families, so we split the tags up and we ended up getting 10 kids. The kids all brought in donations and the teachers went out with the funds they got and purchased all these gifts. Probably each package is worth $60 to $75, so there a good amount there.”

Freeburn said the students learned a lot from the experience.

“Definitely giving and helping others in need,” she said.

Freeburn added the 7 and 8’s have always helped her over at A.A. Wright.

“We’ve done it there the last couple of years, so we brought it here. So this time, all of the classes participated,” she said.

To date this year, the Salvation Army has collected approximately 35% ($158,933) of their annual Christmas campaign goal, with more donations rolling in every day.
