Carl’s Corner

Since last month’s newsletter was written, the price of soymeal has fallen $52 per tonne.  Obviously this is much more beneficial to the livestock producers than the cash crop farmers because of the impact on your feed costs.  Soymeal stocks are expected to be tight throughout the Summer as both Ontario plants plan to shut down in July and August for routine maintenance.

Distillers’ prices are finally beginning to show significant weakness having dropped $20 per tonne this past week.  The wide spread between DDDGs and corn suggests that there is lots of room for them to decrease yet.  It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the price to fall back into line with the corn from which they are derived.

The July feed specials are targeted toward the Beef Cow; sheep and goat minerals.  On the back side of the flyer is an interesting article on feeding grass forages. Although traditionally most of the attention has been on alfalfa, there has been increasing interest in growing grasses which have always been more popular in European countries due to their damper climate.

Dairy producers are accustomed to sampling their feed ingredients regularly so they can balance their rations according to their forage quality.  This is a good idea for all producers to adapt.  Routinely checking your complete feed will confirm that you are in fact supplying the nutrition you desire to your livestock and make any necessary adjustments before they become an issue.  I always carry a probe and sample bags with me in my truck should you like to do so.

I recently became aware of a young local sheep producer who is interested in shearing sheep.  He has taken a course and has been doing more work as others become aware of him.  Because of the lengthy travel time for many shearers to drive from their farms farther north and east, they are unwilling to come this far unless you have a large flock.  Cameron Ostrander lives north of Bothwell and would be happy to accommodate producers large and small.  He can be reached on his cell phone at 519-331-2917.  Hopefully you all have your ewes trimmed by now so they are as comfortable as possible throughout the Summer months.

My final comment this month is a reminder to all livestock producers, regardless of species, to have an abundance of cool, clean water available for your animals, whether they are out on pasture or confined to a barn. This is especially important on hot humid days.

A Holstin dairy cow will drink as much as 25 gallons of water per day to meet her needs if she is milking well.  Their feed consumption is directly related to the restriction of water.  Use common sense at all times to keep your animals healthy and happy.

 

Feed Bin Lids

You may recall that I had previously mentioned that Shur Gain intended to make feed bin lids available to our customers so that our drivers do not have to climb up onto the bins to open the lids.  This was in response to the death of a driver from another feed company who had fallen to his death last year.  I have recently received some lids for those who had told me they need one.  Please call me so I can get them delivered out to you at your convenience.

Rich’s Remarks

What a difference a month can make !!!

Ontario Pork’s report on June 28, 2018 states that the 100% formula price was $203.77 cwt.  This is up $40.48 since last month’s newsletter.  The CME price was $84.63, which is up $15.22 from last month’s newsletter.  The weakening of the Canadian Dollar against the US Dollar has also supported the formula price.

For pigs placed in June, OMAFRA’s Ontario Market Hog Price Trend Sheet for June 28, 2018 is predicting a 100-index price of $141.84/cwt for when they go to market.  This is down $3.54/cwt from the number I showed in last month’s newsletter.  The September, October and November projected prices are similar to where they were last month.  Christmas hogs are predicted to have a 100% formula price around $133/ckg.

Our sow experts and nutritionists talk about feeding today genetics and how they much different they are from genetics a few years ago.  Even within the same company, the requirements of today’s sows are a lot different from before.  We are willing to come to your farm and discuss with you if you are interested.

Don’t forget Ontario Pork and the Pig Mobile will be at the International Plowing Match and they are looking for volunteers.  Contact Ontario Pork sooner than later as there is media/protestor training that needs to be completed forehand.

Disvap IV you are able to spray on animals.

Disvap V is stronger.  Do not spray on animals but you can spray around decks, barns, shrubs and in turn, it leaves a residue.
