WAMBO 26 lived up to expectations and brought thousands of people to Wallaceburg over the course of the weekend.

Bill Wolsing, first time chairperson for the event, said he estimates that at least 25,000 people attended the annual event.

“It’s something to look forward to,” Wolsing said. “It’s an event in the summer time that when they come home, or when students come home, it’s like a great big reunion. I know people look forward to it, you can see it.”

Wolsing said the weather and turn out was amazing.

“It was fantastic, it was awesome,” he said. “It was one of those things when you looked around and you couldn’t ask for anything better. Everything was done well. The work of our volunteers and managers … job well done.”

Wolsing added: “The moon was so bright, I don’t think we needed street lights. I couldn’t believe how bright the moon was, and apparently someone told me it was the brightest moon in 100 years.”

Wolsing said the volunteer support was strong.

“They didn’t get any sleep either,” he said. “They dedicate themselves and they’re there. There is a time frame and sometimes it is not so much during the event, it’s during the night. Some of them worked until two, three, four in the morning and they’re back at eight in the morning. Just making sure the timeline is done. They all have an assignment and they do very, very well. I’m so pleased at the efforts that they do.”

Rob Bonney of Strathroy was the winner of the $22,240 50/50 draw prize from the Knights of Columbus.

Many other organizations in the Wallaceburg community utilize WAMBO for countless other fundraising activities and events as well.

The event concluded today with an interdenominational church service and a free barbecue hosted by MP Bev Shipley and MPP Monte McNaughton.
