Some “much needed” repairs are coming to a Wallaceburg neighbourhood, who have been hit hard with flooding in the past.

Chatham-Kent council approved a tender for the Bruinsma Storm Pump Station rehabilitation project.

Henry Heyink Construction Limited was the winning bidder at at price tag of $129,950.

Wallaceburg Coun. Shedon Parsons said the upgrades will bring relief to this part of the community.

“This part of the community has been hard hit,” he said.

Parsons said many residents in the area were hit by basement flooding twice in a month-long period.

“Some residents barely had their basements dry when they were hit again,” he said. “We don’t want another spring-risk.”

Nelson Cavacas, manager of infrastructure and development engineering, said the work will be completed by the end of the year.

After a request by Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley, Cavacas agreed to send a letter to all neighbours in the area once the work is completed.

“We all wish this didn’t happen,” Wesley said. “But it has been a good process moving forward.”

Wesley said Chatham-Kent staff members listened to the concerns of the neighbours that were effected by the flooding, with many coming directly to the residents homes.

A repiort written by Cavacas states thsat the Bruinsma Subdivision Storm Pump Station was constructed in 1976 in the first phase of the Bruinsma Subdivision and was designed to service the entire subdivision area.

Since the initial construction of this storm pump station, no major improvements have been
completed aside from routine maintenance, Cavacas said in his report.

Cavacas said the scope of the project will consist of removal of the existing 250mm diameter pump station outlet and installation of a new 400mm diameter pump station outlet, along with the installation of a new 750mm diameter pump station overflow sewer pipe discharge into Running Creek and various other site works involving earth grading and reinforced concrete work.
