Quitters never win and winners never quit

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

A few weeks back I was following my favourite NFL team, the Cleveland Browns, as they played a road game against the Tennessee Titans.

As usual, the Browns had dug themselves a big hole, falling behind 28-3 just before halftime.

I had some errands to run but when I returned to the game I received a most pleasant surprise.

I tuned in just in time to see the Browns score the winning touchdown, completing the biggest road comeback in NFL history.

Dead and buried just before the first half ended, the determined Cleveland players refused to quit and were rewarded with the win.

Someone once said the now-famous line, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.”

The Bible encourages this type of attitude, as it says in Galatians 6:9: “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if do not lose heart.”

I coach a cross country running team each fall in our community and I am amazed at how perseverance in would-be quitters leads to excellent results on race day.

This year was no exception at our recent cross country meet in early October.

Of course, something that goes hand in hand with not quitting is the wonderful gift of encouragement.

Spurring someone on to finish their race, or complete a task, or practice a song until you get it right goes a long way in helping the person achieve their goal.

So, keep at it , whatever “it” is, and also encourage others who tempted to throw in the towel.

Together you can both accomplish your goals!
