A Wallaceburg woman is thankful, after an extremely close call in the thick of Monday’s wind storm.
Barb Knight told the Sydenham Current she was heading back to her home on Hilda Avenue in Wallaceburg on Monday, to meet her mother.
“My mom had offered to make some home made chicken noodle soup for my kids and I for dinner and she called me to say she was at my house with the pot,” Knight said.
After she left the Employment Centre in Wallaceburg, she drove down Wellington Street, over the Dundas Bridge past the Wallaceburg Legion, and stopped at the intersection at Margaret Ave., Murray Street and Main Street around 1:50 p.m.
“I had just began to move, the light turned green and a white four door in front of my car started to merge onto the Murray Street bridge… the branch came down and I was able to stop on a dime,” she said. “It just missed my car by less than an inch. There were pieces of splintered wood on my hood, but not a scratch.”
Knight added “I saw the hydro line split, the piece that was attached to the traffic lights landed on the white four door that had just began to merge, and the other landed on a white car parked in the drive way of the apartments on the corner. It was literally right in front of me.”
Knight said her first instinct was to thank God.
“To be honest, I heard nothing… just the wind,” she said. “Although, I was listening to a good song on my radio. Instinct kicked in though, before I actually realized what had happened. I put on my hazards, put my car in park and called 911.”
Chatham-Kent police and fire officials, along with Entegrus crews, arrived at the scene to clean up the mess.
No injuries were reported.
Public Works crews in Chatham-Kent are still busy cleaning up on Tuesday following the storm.
