‘Habitats for hounds’ built during challenge

With the sound of hammers pounding and the sight of sawdust flying, teams of two enjoyed a fun-filled day of competition at the first ever C-K Habitat Handyman Challenge on Saturday, February 28th.

The competition, which was held right beside the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, challenged teams to build a doghouse that was not only functional but creative as well.

They were given a time limit to complete their project all while facing mini challenges along the way.

“The creativity was amazing with designs ranging from the traditional doghouse all the way to a retro-styled trailer and a motor home,” said Nancy McDowell, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent. “The teams came prepared with designs, extra materials and their enthusiasm which resulted in a lot of fun and some interesting structures.”

The judging resulted in a tight race with only 10 points separating the top four designs.

The winning team of Michael and Bridgitte Fife, team Fife ‘N’ Hammer, won a pair of Bosch cordless drills with their fully insulated design that boasted a wind resistant entrance.

The signature sponsor, Entegrus, provided funding, volunteers and team participation in the event including the top fundraising team of Mark Hogg and Daniel Josling, of the team No Permit Needed.

“We are very fortunate to have the support of Entegrus in this event as well as our Geocache Challenge the end of May and our Heart to Home walk in October,” said McDowell. “Home Depot was another one of our main sponsors, generously providing the bulk of the materials needed to run the event.”

The doghouses, which will be on display all week at the ReStore located at 566 Riverview Drive in Chatham, will be auctioned off on Saturday, March 7th at 9:30.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to support the local branch of the OSPCA.
