Walking bridge meeting this week

Preparations are under way for the construction project to begin on the Wallaceburg walking bridge.

The L.O. Stonehouse Memorial Walk Bridge was closed to foot traffic last week, as crews prepare to fix the downtown structure over the next few months.

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley said the contractor – McLean Taylor Construction Ltd. – did start preparations slightly early.

“It was always in the plan that they would start in early April with completion by the end of June,” Wesley said.

Members of the Wallaceburg BIA, Wallaceburg and District Chamber of Commerce and other stakeholders are set to meet with the contractor on Thursday.

We’ve “waited a long time for this to happen,” Wesley said.

McLean Taylor Construction Ltd. was awarded the project with their winning bid of $540,419.07 in February.

The community rallied together in support of keeping the downtown Wallaceburg bridge, after it was listed on the potential chopping block a couple of years ago.

Wesley anticipates the project to be fun for the community.

“The BIA and local volunteers and donations will be working with the contractor to accomplish a lot more than just a new span for the walkway – it will be a community event that will be fun,” Wesley said last month.
