Much is made these days of talent.
We saw plenty of it on display in the recent men’s World Cup soccer tournament this past summer.
But author James Clear once said: “Talent is a gift. Reliability is a choice. But every family, team, and organization needs reliability as much as it needs talent.”
Clear added to his assertion by saying the following: “What we call luck is not purely random, but rather the delayed byproduct of consistently putting yourself in good positions.”
I have another term for it: showing up.
As a pastor, I can tell you that the church would shut down were it not for reliable people, consistently showing up when there’s a job to do, a person to visit, or a meal to be served to our community.
I need to know that people will be there when a task needs to be done.
I often hear people apologize that they aren’t an expert at something, or that their efforts seem feeble, but the fact is, their reliability more than makes up for that in most cases.
Reliability is never more appreciated than when you’re in a jam and the chips are down.
That’s when you really need someone to show up!
Look at what the Lord promised His people in Isaiah 43:2-3: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.”
Even when others don’t show up, God does.
Now that is something we can rely on!
