While a local Wallaceburg singer did her part to help sell out a Saturday concert at the Jeanne Gordon Theatre, singing is not her only passion.
Mikayla Lozon, 17, who is opening up for Emm Gryner at the Wallaceburg and District Council for the Arts concert, told the Sydenham Current about another one of the loves in her life – hunting.
“I have been hunting since I was really little,” she said. “My Dad would take me. I didn’t have a licence to shoot anything, so I would just sit in the tree stand or in the gravel blind with dad.”
Mikayla said it became something she loved to do, so when she turned 12 she took the hunting course, passed and got her licence.
“Dad had this trip planned for awhile, so a week later we went up bear hunting by Parry Sound,” she said. “We didn’t wait very long and then he came in at 600 pounds. Dad said ‘Shoot it’ and I shot it and I was pretty shocked.”
Mikayla said they waited about 20 minutes, before climbing down.
“Dad called his friend up so we could go find the bear and bring it back,” she said. “We went to our quad to do that and when we came back to the bear, there was another one.”
“It charged us five or six times,” said Jay Lozon, Mikayla’s dad. “He would run right at us. Growling at us. Mikayla was standing there with her arms up in the air yelling at him till it ran away.”
Mikayla added: “I read a thing that you are suppose to make yourself look bigger than the bear.”
The crossbow hunting trip took place in Britt, Ontario back in 2010.
The bear provided a lot of food for the Lozon’s, including steaks, roasts and over 50 pounds of pepperettes.
Mikayla received trophies for her feat and was featured in a hunting magazine article.
To this day, the taxidermied bear is on display in the Lozon’s living room.
