World Habitat Day celebrated in Chatham-Kent

Representatives from Habitat for Humanity as well as the Municipality of Chatham-Kent gathered at the Civic Centre to raise a flag in recognition of World Habitat Day.

This UN-designated day is a call for Canadians of all ages to be part of Canada’s affordable housing solution.

The ceremony was particularly meaningful as future Habitat home owner, Becca Davis, joined Rev. Mark Perry and Councilor Brock McGregor in the dedication ceremony and flag raising.

Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent will be hosting a key turning ceremony on Oct. 17th, the date when Becca, along with her husband, Ryan, and their three children will officially purchase their new home in Wallaceburg.

Locally, people already support affordable housing each and every time they make a purchase or simply donate at Habitat for Humanity and the ReStore located at 566 Riverview Drive in Chatham.

Those simple acts help the local affiliate build safe and affordable housing for families living in Chatham-Kent.

It is also the incredible power of volunteerism that generates and sustains the energy behind every construction project as well as the operation of the ReStore.

Every hour donated and every skill shared contributes to the ability of building homes and changing lives by providing homeownership opportunities.

You can also support affordable housing solutions by simply spreading the word about Habitat for Humanity’s application process to those families with modest income, living in conditions which currently exhibit need and who are willing to partner in doing volunteer hours.

About Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent

Founded in 2009, Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent is a faith-based, non-profit organization working towards a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Their mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.

With the help of a dedicated team of volunteers, the organization recently opened a social enterprise known as the ReStore which sells new and gently used furniture, appliances and building materials that have been donated to them.

Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent is one of 57 Canadian affiliates and is a member of Habitat for Humanity International, which has built, rehabilitated, repaired or improved more than 600,000 houses worldwide, providing shelter for more than 3 million people since it was founded in 1976.
