First Wednesday soup cellar a hit at Knox

knox

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

I attended the first Wednesday ‘soup cellar’ at Knox Presbyterian last week, and was very impressed!

There were concerns expressed about going to two days a week (Mondays and now Wednesdays), but, according to organizer Michelle MacLean: “It was fantastic – I was very thrilled.”

Kinda says it all, I guess. 🙂

The menu included egg salad sandwiches, ham salad sandwiches on croissants, tons of desserts, fresh fruit, tea, coffee and cold drinks… and even one hot item, a potato salad.

“There certainly didn’t seem to be any complaints,” MacLean said.

The volunteer staff would like to keep Wednesdays “doable”, as there’s a lot more work with hot meals, but MacLean said, “as long as people are nourished, I’m happy.”

As is often the case, there were great baked goods to be taken home as well.

Bread, rolls, bagels and more were available, and went quite quickly.

“The plan will be to continue until there’s not a need,” MacLean said.

Based on Wednesday’s attendance, which included many regulars and also some newcomers, it appears that the program will continue.

Again, kudos to all the volunteers and donors who make it happen…and if you know someone who could use a little help, spread the word.
