‘Try Day’ held at LKCS in Dresden

Special to the Sydenham Current

New fitness activities are popping up at LKCS – double waves, snakes on the floor, power slam – these are all examples of exercises that can be performed with battle ropes, the newest piece of fitness equipment at Dresden’s high school.

Thanks to financial support from the Ministry of Education through the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA), LKCS has purchased a set of ropes and support base for use by the physical education classes.

“The ropes add to the program and fitness activities we are able to offer,” said Derek Kominek, health and physical education curriculum leader at LKCS.

“All grades, 9-12, have used the ropes during their fitness units. The students have a lot of fun with them, and have come up with some creative ways to use them in class. Many senior students used the ropes when designing and teaching fitness circuits to their classmates as part of an assignment.”

“Try Day” is a program that is administered through OFSAA, funded by the Ministry of Education, which provides schools with up to $700 to introduce a new sport or activity to their program.

It appeals to all students by providing fun activities suitable for all ages and abilities.

It also provides leadership opportunities for students.
