The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 in Wallaceburg is set to honour local veterans, and they’ll be adding some flare to downtown Wallaceburg at the same time.

Plans are in the works to launch the “Salute a Veteran” banner program, which would result in banners installed on the street lights in the downtown core from October to after Remembrance Day.

Wallaceburg Legion officials say the idea got an “overwhelming response” when it was presented to their executive and membership. The idea was then presented to the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and the Wallaceburg BIA.

The banners, 22 to 25 in total, would be put up during the weeks leading up to November 11th for three consecutive years, before being retired and given back to the banner sponsor.

Here are some details about the banners:

– Banner size is 24” x 54”

– Made from 19 ounce vinyl

– Using a two pole installation with pockets at top and bottom of each banner

– Both sides of the banner are identical, with: the Canadian flag in top left corner, the British flag in top right corner, the wording ‘Lest We Forget’, Veteran photo (usually black and white in military uniform), Veteran Name, Branch of Military, sponsor name, and emblems (to be determined.)

Wallaceburg Legion officials say the cost of each banner is $200, which will be paid by the sponsor and this includes the banner, installation, removal and storage or possibly displayed at our branch.

The sponsor can be the family or a business that wishes to sponsor veterans, both past and present, and those from this immediate area will be the focus.

One Promo in Hanover will be creating the signs and they will be donating $10 from the cost of each banner back to the Royal Canadian Legion for the Homeless Vet Program.

The committee consists of Mike Hindmarsh, branch president, Dan Young and Lee Marshall, the poppy campaign co-chairs, and Peter Polkinghorne, the public relations chairperson.
