Wildcats gather items for Fort McMurray

Students from A.A. Wright Public School in Wallaceburg learned this week about helping those in need… even if they don’t live in your own backyard.

Ben Hazzard, principal at the school, said the students contributed to the initiative launched by Wallaceburg business Wallace-Kent Sprinkler Systems, which supports the fire victims in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

“Students brought in items over two days that included toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, diapers, and powder baby formula,” Hazzard told the Sydenham Current.

“Students had been learning about the devastation and this provided a hands on learning opportunity about caring for each other, even when the affected people are across the country. We also wanted to support the community initiative in Wallaceburg.”

Hazzard said Each child carried the items and walked to the collection area on Arnold Street as a whole school on Thursday.

“Students each took an item that was brought into the school,” he said.

“The students learned that each person can contribute in their own way. This initiative was spearheaded by Ms. Dramnitzke and fully embraced by the A.A. Wright community.”

Hazzard added additional fundraising activities are being planned so that funds can be contributed to the Red Cross’ efforts.
