Three horses have died after being struck by a gravel truck just outside of Sarnia.

Sarnia police officials say at approximately 4:20 a.m. this morning a tractor trailer gravel truck was travelling westbound on Churchill Line in the area of Telfer Road when it struck a number of horses that were on the road way.

Unfortunately, the four horses had escaped from their farm earlier.

The collision caused the truck to have lost control and veer off the road and through a number of fences where it finally struck a hydro pole and shortly thereafter came to rest.

This caused a power outage in the area.

The driver of the truck, a 56-year-old man, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

One of the horses died on impact while two others were examined by a veterinarian and due to the extent of their injuries were euthanized.

The fourth horse made it home safely.

Since then Bluewater Power has been out to replace the pole to restore power and the County of Lambton have re-opened the road.
