Aboriginal medical facilities to be studied

The Sydenham District Hospital board is heading North to learn more about aboriginal medical facilities in Ontario.

Kris Lee, a board member with SDH, is set to make a trip at the end of the summer touring different Northern and aboriginal medical facilities to get a grasp of what’s available.

Conrad Noel, vice chair of the board, entered a successful motion at the SDH board meeting on June 16 for Lee to make the trip and conduct a study of her findings, at no cost to the board.

“As most people here know I’ve been raising that issue for a number of years to get more familiar with First Nations communities because when you’re providing a healthcare service to those communities you really need to know a little bit more about their culture, lifestyle and those types of things,” said Herb John, SDH board member.

“Kris has really had an interest in the North for quite some time and she’s proposing we do this in order to go to different locations in the North where traditional medicine that we know and First Nations historical medicine, where locations have found a way for those to work together and provide better health outcomes for First Nations people.”

John added: “The intent here is to do a study and bring a report back to the board, so that we can use that information in making progress here in providing better health outcomes to the First Nations of our community.”

The Annual General Meeting for the SDH Corporation membership will be held at the UAW Hall in Wallaceburg on Thursday, June 23 at 5 p.m.
