Police are looking for information from the public, after five people allegedly overdosed on drugs on the weekend at the Sombra Bridge Bash.

The Lambton County OPP Street Crime Unit has now taken the lead into the investigation.

Police officials say they are attempting to identify the source of the illegal drugs.

The OPP received four calls for service in relation to five individuals who were in medical distress due to an alleged drug overdose at the event, held on Saturday, July 9 at the Darcy McKeough Floodway in the St. Clair River.

Both male and female victims, ranging from 17 to 23 years of age, informed police that they had ingested an illegal street drug commonly known as ecstasy.

All five victims were transported to hospital with non-life threatening concerns.

The Lambton County OPP is asking that if anyone has information regarding the person or persons responsible or has information regarding the source of the drugs, to contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or (519) 882-1011, or their nearest police authority.

Should they wish to remain anonymous, they may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), where they may be eligible to receive a cash reward.

Police say the event attracted an estimated 100 vessels and a further estimated 500 people.

Organizers say there were some positives stemming from the event.

The Down River band posted on social media earlier this week that $500 was raised for cancer research at the pig roast portion of the festivities.

“Thanks again to everybody who came out and hopefully the community can look past the negative in this situation and see that it’s for a good cause and is meant to be a good time for everyone,” the band wrote.

“The four of us want everyone to know that what happened to some of the people at the bash was the furthest thing away from our intentions. So on behalf of everybody involved with bridge bash we’d like to apologize for what happened… not that we had any control over it, and we hope that this doesn’t ruin it for next year.”

The investigation is on-going.
