An Aboriginal Veteran’s Day Remembrance ceremony was held on Walpole Island on Thursday.
The Children’s Centre organized the event, which was attended by local veterans, politicians and students from Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig and Wallaceburg District Secondary School.
The names of former Walpole Island residents were served in the armed forces for both Canada and the United States were announced, along with veteran’s currently serving as well.
“The reason we are here is to honour our veterans and to also remember the warriors and the veterans of the past,” said Dan Miskokomon, Chief of Walpole Island First Nation.
“There are warriors that fought on both sides, Canada, the United States as well as other allies. The best thing we can do is appreciate their efforts. Without them and their contributions we wouldn;t have the freedom that we have today. That is key.”
Miskokomon added” “When you see a veteran, mention their name. The best thing in life is to hear your name. For the youth, it is for you to understand what your parents, elders and relatives have went thorough.”
Miskokomon also congratulated and thanked the Children’s Centre for organizing the celebration once again this year.
