The investigation is on-going after a animal rescue group was the target of a break-in and theft in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police officials say officers responded to a break and enter that occurred during the early morning hours at an Edgar Street residence in Chatham.

Police say suspects made off with a large quantity of dog and cat food along with a supply of pet leashes, outerwear and collars.

These items were to be used by Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) to stockpile the animal shelter in Chatham.

However, due to the theft, members of PAWR are scrambling to gather the necessary items needed to care for the animals, police say.

While the crime currently remains under investigation, members of PAWR are asking for the public’s help.

Those that wish to donate pet food or supplies can contact Pat Ready at pawrrescue@gmail.com or by visiting their website at www.pawr.org.

If anyone has information regarding the break and enter they can contact Const. Mike Taylor at 519-436-6600 or at miketa@chatham-kent.ca.

PAWR had recently been awarded the animal control contract for Wards 2 and 6 in Chatham-Kent.

The contract for services with the OSPCA, and the lease of the existing animal shelter in Chatham, expires today (November 11).
