Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope was among the first to add his message to a poster recognizing May as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Chatham-Kent.

CKPS Inspector Trevor Crane and Councillors Karen Herman and David VanDamme also added their support.

Part of the message is the theme ‘no one asks for it.’

Michelle Schryer, Executive Director of the Chatham-Kent Sexual Assault Crisis Centre said one of the major events of the month will be a symposium with the Chatham-Kent Police Services, Friday May 12 at the John D. Bradley Conference Centre.

The event will discuss why sexual assault is among the crimes least likely to be reported to police in Canada.

It will also address the number of allegations listed as ‘unfounded’ by police.

A second event will be a May 23 session at Studio One, Chatham Cultural Centre, regarding the need for effective legislation to protect workers from harassment and violence. A topic will be the new harassment legislation in Ontario, employee rights and the employer’s obligation to develop a Workplace Harassment Policy and investigate all complaints.
