WR Detasseling looking to hire ‘ambitious teenagers’

WR Detasseling is looking to hire around 150 “ambitious teenagers” in the Dresden, Thamesville and Bothwell areas this summer.

Kent Willmore, president of the company, said the kids need to be at least be 13-years-old and going back to school in the fall.

“One of the best ways to understand what to expect is to go to our website,” Willmore said.

“We actually have videos that demonstrate all of the different things they need to expect. What to wear and how to prepare. It is really a good place to go if you have never corn detasseled before.”

Willmore said the season is typically three to four weeks long.

“It is based on the heat and the weather,” he said.

“It typically starts around July 10 to 15 and then it will last three to four weeks from there. Usually the experienced workers are called first and the inexperienced are called to work a few days after that. Then it is up to the individual detasseler to see how long they stay with the company.”

Willmore a typical day of work is eight hours or less.

“The reason we do that is that we want our employees to come back the next day,” he said.

“We find that if you work the students much past 2 p.m. it is too hard on them and they won’t come back the next day. So we’re typically between six to seven hours in the fields each day.”

Willmore said they love the Dresden, Thamesville and Bothwell areas.

“Most of those students come from farm families and they are excellent workers and they are nice people on top of that,” he said.

“So we really enjoy working with that area. We have two full school buses that pick up at six different locations in the area so there is lots of opportunity to join our company.”

Willmore added: “We actually have about 35 pick up locations through Southwestern Ontario and we hire over 1,000 students each summer. In the Dresden area, we run two school buses so we are looking to hire about 150 students from the Dresden, Thamesville and Bothwell area.”
