Vodka poured, hammer thrown during assault

Vodka was poured and a hammer was thrown, as an argument escalated into violence in Chatham on Sunday evening.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say yesterday around 6 p.m. a man and a woman, who have been in a relationship, were together in a vehicle.

While the woman was driving, the man allegedly poured vodka on her and then pulled the keys out of the ignition.

The vehicle came to a stop on Gray Street in Chatham, police say.

They both exited the vehicle and began arguing.

The man allegedly pushed the woman to the ground and struck her in his attempt to get away.

The woman then found a hammer and allegedly threw it at the man as he was walking away from her.

She missed hitting him with the hammer, but once she caught up to him, she allegedly began kicking him repeatedly.

Police were called and located both of them still within the area.

Minor injuries were reported.

A 34-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with two counts of assault.

He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters where he has been held for a bail hearing.

A 31-year-old Chatham woman was arrested and charged with assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

She was also transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters where she has been held for a bail hearing.
