Charity BBQ’s planned for ‘Rick’s Ride for Hope’

Charity barbecues are planned for the rest of the summer in support of an injured Wallaceburg man.

The grill will be fired up every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wallaceburg Library Park during the Outdoor Summer Concert Series, with the proceeds going towards Rick’s Ride for Hope.

Wallaceburg resident Rick Bernard had been planning a bike ride from Wallaceburg to the Ronald McDonald House in London this summer, when his plans were drastically changed on June 30.

Bernard was seriously injured while training for his bicycle ride fundraiser when he was struck by a flat-bed truck on McCreary Line near Mandaumin Road.

Total damage was estimated at $1,500, police officials say.

The driver, a 59-year-old Newbury man, was charged with failing to turn out to the left to avoid a collision with a bicycle.

Bernard seriously injured his elbow and will require multiple surgeries, his family told the Sydenham Current.

“I might be down, but I’m not out,” Bernard posted on social media.

“I have a long journey ahead of me, but I know with all the help and caring from all the wonderful people around me, I will make it through this. I am obviously not sure when, but I will be completing my bike ride to London for the Ronald McDonald House.”

Bernard told the Sydenham Current back in May that he has wanted to give back to the London-based organization ever since his twin boys, Max and Joe, were born six-weeks premature. Read more about his story, here.
