CKPS participating in Gun Amnesty Program

The Chatham-Kent Police Service, in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and other Police Services are holding a Gun Amnesty during the month of April.

The Gun Amnesty is for any Ontario resident who wishes to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition.

The Amnesty is a way to provide citizens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety. The goal is ultimately to reduce the number of guns on our streets and in our communities.

During the Amnesty, police will not recommend weapons-related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items.

Note: *There is no Amnesty offered for people who turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime. No anonymous submissions will be accepted.*

Interested participants within Chatham-Kent are encouraged to call the Chatham-Kent Police Service at 519-436-6653 to arrange for officers to attend and safely retrieve the weapons.

Those living outside the jurisdiction of Chatham-Kent are urged to call their local Police Service or OPP.

Under NO circumstances should anyone deliver guns or ammunition directly to police facilities.

Zonta assists Library to raise funds with ‘Purses With a Purpose’ event

The Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent is proud to announce that they are nearing $10,000 in donations to Chatham-Kent Public Library.

Tania Sharpe, Chief Librarian of Chatham-Kent Public Library, recently thanked the Zonta Club’s Purses with a Purpose Committee for their ongoing support.

This year marks the 5th year of collaboration between the library and the Zonta Club to offer a fun tea party and purse raffle, with $2,000 going towards CKPL each year.

Local businesses donate purses which are raffled off during the party. Wanda Bell, chair of the Purses with a Purpose Committee says, “We are very lucky to have dedicated donors, and this year’s line up of purses is as lovely as ever.”

The fundraiser will be held at St. Paul’s Congregational Church on Saturday, April 21 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Tea and a selection of scrumptious treats will be served, but the highlight of the afternoon will be the raffle of at least 25 purses. Bell added, “In order to build excitement, the most popular purses will be saved until the end. It is always so much fun to see who wins!”

The Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent works to empower women in the community and around the world, and the library’s mission is to be an indispensable centre of culture, community and learning in Chatham-Kent. Working together, their shared goal is to provide resources that empower women and highlight women’s issues such as information on human trafficking, domestic abuse, and women in leadership roles, among others.

The organizers hope that attendance this year will be the highest yet. Tickets are on sale now at CKPL’s Chatham Branch (120 Queen St.), at Rubies (661 Grand Ave. E), and online through www.zontachathamkent.org. The $30.00 ticket includes tea, desserts, and 5 raffle tickets. Additional raffle tickets are available the day of event.
