Bring your pets indoors from the cold

Animal Control Services officials are encouraging people to bring their pets inside from the cold.

“The cold weather is officially here and we would like to remind pet owners that these cold temperatures can be very dangerous to animals,” Animal Control officials say.

“The forecast for tomorrow includes temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius with a windchill of -35. Temperatures like these can be very harmful to pets within minutes. We cannot stress enough if your animal does not have proper shelter the safest place for them is inside the home.”

Proper shelter could include an insulated dog house with bedding such as straw, a heat lamp or other materials to regulate temperature, officials added.

Animal Control has received 10 calls within the last three days about animals being left out in the cold.

Chatham-Kent’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-law states, “No person shall allow an animal to remain outdoors during extreme weather, except for brief walks or brief periods of exercise, unless the animal has access to an animal enclosure that will adequately protect the animal from the elements.”

If anyone has concerns about pets being left in the outdoors please call Animal Control at 226-996-9969 or Chatham-Kent Police at 519-352-1234.

C-K seeking more budget input

Following strong turnout at last week’s community open house sessions, Chatham-Kent Council is seeking continued public input as it heads into budget deliberations this week.

More than 120 people attended open houses in Blenheim, Dresden, Tilbury, Chatham and Wallaceburg last week, a number that pleased budget chair Counc. Brock McGregor.

“It’s good to see so many people interested in the process both in terms of educating themselves on how it works and providing feedback on what they would like to see in the community,” he said.

Budget Committee deliberations are scheduled for January 30, 31 and February 5 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in council chambers. Tentative sessions are scheduled February 6 and 7 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the same location.

Budget sessions will not be televised but are open to the public.

Written and verbal presentations of up to five minutes are welcome each evening – please sign up at the door. Deputations for the January 30 session will begin at 8 p.m.

On all other nights, deputations will begin at 6 p.m.

Please check the schedule posted on the 2019 budget website for updates on the timing for deputations.

Chatham-Kent officials recommend that you contact ckfps@chatham-kent.ca in advance if you have a presentation.

If people require a specific accommodation, please contact us at 519-360-1998, 48 hours in advance, so we can work with you to make these arrangements.
