Police: Pursuit ends in charges, drugs, helmets stolen, assault

Pursuit leads to arrest and charges

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Yesterday morning, shortly after 8 a.m. an officer on general patrol observed a yellow cube van travelling at a high rate of speed through a red light at the intersection of King Street and Fifth Street in Chatham.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, however the man failed to pull over.

The pursuit was terminated for public safety reasons as the man continued driving in a dangerous manner.

Police received information from citizens that the van was speeding through residential areas.

Officers located the van again and attempted to stop it as the man drove down an alley way and through a parking lot.

The man made intentional contact with a police cruiser, causing damage to the passenger side doors.

He then exited the van and fled on foot.

Following a short foot chase, the man, who continued to resist arrest, was taken into custody.

Through investigation, police learned that van was stolen from LaSalle and that the man was a prohibited from driving.

The 29-year-old Euphemia Township man has been charged with:

– Flight from police

– Dangerous driving x 3

– Resist arrest

– Theft of motor vehicle

– Being in possession of property obtained by a crime over $5,000

– Driving while disqualified x 3

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Man charged with drug possession

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Yesterday afternoon, an officer on general patrol initiated a traffic stop in Chatham.

Through investigation, police learned that the man was suspended from driving.

The man was arrested for this offence and upon being searched incident to arrest, was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine.

A 32-year-old Chatham man was charged with driving while under suspension and drug possession.

He was released pending future court dates in July.

Man charged with assault

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Last night, police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Ridgetown.

Through investigation, police learned that the man assaulted his fiancé during a verbal argument.

The 27-year-old Ridgetown man was arrested and charged with assault.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Man charged with domestic related offences

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Last night, a woman contacted police for assistance.

Through investigation, the woman disclosed that she had been the victim of domestic abuse.

A 33-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with mischief under $5,000, forcible confinement, uttering threats and two counts of assault.

He was released pending a future court date of June 23, 2020.

Update: Stolen car recovered

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: As previously released, sometime late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, unknown suspects stole a 2006 purple Chevrolet HHR (heritage high roof) from a residence on George Street in Ridgetown.

Yesterday afternoon, police located the vehicle on Talbot Street West in Blenheim.

Theft of helmets

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Sometime last week, between Tuesday and Sunday, unknown suspects forced their way into a trailer at Wolf Creek BMX on Creek Road in Chatham and stole 10 red and black racing helmets.

Total value of the theft has been estimated at $1,400.
