The valuable lesson of unlearning

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

When I was in Grade 9 I tried out for the school’s badminton team.

At the first practice the coach asked if anyone had ever played badminton before.

About half of us proudly raised our hands to show the others that we had some experience, and presumably, an advantage.

We couldn’t have been more wrong.

The coach sighed and said, “Unfortunately, those who have played before have an uphill battle because you have no doubt gotten used to holding the racket with an improper grip, like a tennis racket. Badminton is all in the wrist.”

None of us made the team that year but I worked hard to learn the proper grip and “unlearn” the wrong one.

It felt awkward, and there was much frustration, but in the end I became quite competitive in the sport of badminton.

Sometimes the only way progress is made is through unlearning.

When I first accepted the Lord into my life I also had to do a fair bit of unlearning.

I thought what God wanted was for me to try harder at doing more things for Him and going to church more often.

However, as I began reading the Bible, I saw that I needed to allow Christ to do a work in me.

I needed to pray and ask God how He wanted me to live.

At the beginning things seemed too easy, like there had to be more to this Christian life than what I had read in the Bible.

But over time I have found that God’s way is always the best way.

Are there any areas in your life right now that may require you to go through a time of “unlearning”?

The process may seem difficult at first but in the end you will have a better result.
