Water safety bulletin issued across the SCRCA

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) has issued a water safety bulletin, as 15-20 mm rain is expected and minor flooding and possible shoreline erosion is anticipated.

“A low pressure system tracking through Southern Ontario this weekend is anticipated to bring 15-20 mm of rain across the St. Clair region Saturday, however rainfall amounts may vary based on region,” SCRCA officials say.

“This amount of rain on remaining snowpack has the potential to elevate water levels into natural floodplain areas, parks and farm fields. Soils are anticipated to be saturated from the rain and could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues.”

SCRCA officials say winds over Lake St. Clair are anticipated to be southeasterly early Saturday afternoon, turning south-southwesterly by the evening and westerly over night into early Sunday morning.

“Gusts are forecast to be between 50-60 km/h, with sustained winds of 30-40 km/h,” SCRCA officials say.

“Winds from a southerly or westerly direction have the potential to cause a backwater effect in the Wallaceburg area, slowing the movement of water out of the river and contributing to elevated water levels. Residents along the Lake St. Clair shoreline may experience storm surge and possible erosion.”

Northwesterly winds over Lake Huron are anticipated to gust upwards of 60 km/h early Sunday and into the late morning, with sustained winds between 30-40 km/h, SCRCA officials added.

“Residents along the Lake Huron shoreline, in particular the Old Lakeshore Road area of Brights Grove, may experience increased wave action and erosion,” SCRCA officials say.

“River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Monday, December 14, 2020 unless otherwise updated.
