Active COVID-19 cases drop to 65 in C-K, new outbreak in a place of worship

The active COVID-19 case count has dropped by five and now sits at 65 across Chatham-Kent.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit updated their ‘current situation’ page, which provides a summary of COVID-19 cases and testing in Chatham-Kent, on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.

The total number of COVID-19 cases increased by four and sits at 1,452 across Chatham-Kent.

CK Public Health officials say two people remain hospitalized with COVID-19 from Chatham-Kent.

Public health officials announced nine new recoveries, increasing the total at 1,378.

A new outbreak in a place of worship was announced by public health officials on Wednesday.

“At this time we are not reporting the specific name of the facility as per our privacy policy and we will defer to the location to speak further on it should they wish to,” Jeff Moco, a spokesperson for the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, told the Sydenham Current.

“At the moment, we are managing a current outbreak of three cases and have begun the contact tracing process to identify and test close contacts. The place of worship has voluntarily closed down since being notified of a positive case in attendance, and they have been advised to stay closed until further notice and are only offering virtual services at the moment.”

Three institutional outbreaks also remain active across Chatham-Kent: at Copper Terrace in Chatham and in the Dialysis and the Lab Services units of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance in Chatham.

40 of the active cases across Chatham-Kent are are linked to close contact, nine are unknown, eight cases have information pending, three are linked to travel, two cases are linked to institutional outbreaks in Chatham-Kent, two are linked to outbreaks in community settings and one case is linked to workplace outbreaks outside of Chatham-Kent.

Since the pandemic began in March, nine people from Chatham-Kent have died from COVID-19.

A total of 88,854 tests for the virus have been completed to date.

Public health officials say 14,798 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered to date.

Beginning on Monday, March 1, 2021, Chatham-Kent moved into the ‘Orange-Restrict’ tier of the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open framework.

Provincial officials announced on Friday, March 12, 2021 that Chatham-Kent would remain in the ‘Orange-Restrict’ tier.
