Community Living Wallaceburg supporting ‘yarn bombing’ for Deafblind Awareness Month

Community Living Wallaceburg is supporting ‘yarn bombing’ in recognition of Deafblind Awareness Month.

“The month of June marks the beginning of Deafblind Awareness Month, a national initiative where organizations that provide services for people who are deafblind raise awareness about the distinct experience of people with this disability and highlight the intervenor services that can help empower individuals who are deafblind,” Community Living Wallaceburg officials say.

“Deafblindness is a disability arising from a dual sensory impairment of hearing and sight. The impaired senses are unable to compensate for each other thus making the use of tactile sign language a primary source of communication.”

Community Living Wallaceburg is uniting with Sensity Canada for the global initiative: yarn bombing; a form of tactile street art where yarn that is knitted, crocheted, or wrapped decorates an object in a public space.

“Each item symbolizes the coming together of people in celebration of Deafblind Awareness Month,” Community Living Wallaceburg officials say.

“Christa, a person we support, has always dreamed about raising awareness in her own community, so our goal is to completely yarn bomb a space outside her home and we need your help to reach this goal”

Community Living Wallaceburg officials added: “Any knit, crochet, wrapped or yarn donations will be greatly appreciated. Know how to knit and want to get involved further? We are looking for an incredible champion that would be willing to attach all the items together for installation day… learn more by emailing Shelby Johnston at Shelby.Johnston@getintocommunityliving.com.”

People can drop off knitted and crocheted squares by May 31 to:

Community Living Wallaceburg
1100 Dufferin Ave
Wallaceburg, ON

“Don’t know how to knit? That’s okay, yarn bomb a space of your own on installation day, June 16, by wrapping yarn around a household item/landmark and tagging Community Living Wallaceburg on social media,” Community Living Wallaceburg officials added.
