Ontario Power Generation officials say the implosion was part of their coal closure plan, which remains one of the world’s single largest climate change actions.
“We now look to decarbonize the future with our clean hydro, a refurbished Darlington Nuclear and our planned Small Modular Reactor,” Ontario Power Generation officials tweeted.
Todd Smith, the Minister of Energy in Ontario, called Saturday’s implosion a “historic day” for Ontario’s clean energy advantage.
“We’re ending the coal era in Ontario by demolishing the last remaining coal generating station,” Minister Smith tweeted.
“Our province’s future is bright, with (clean technology), our nuclear advantage and (electric vehicle) adoption.”
Originally built as a four-unit, 2,000-megawatt plant, Ontario Power Generation officials say the Lambton Generating Station stopped operating on September 20, 2013, as Ontario Power Generation transitioned away from coal.
