Walpole Island First Nation officials announced on Thursday, March 31, 2022 they continue to work with the Ferry Board to improve accessibility to the ferry.

“As many are aware of the issues with the Ferry entrance/parking lot, a temporary compromise has been made for the Ferry to open on Friday April 1,” Walpole Island First Nation officials posted on social media.

“WIFN Chief and Council and the Ferry Board have made an agreement that the Ferry Board will widen the Walpole Island owned lot to as wide as eight lanes. The Ferry Board will need to hire more assistance to maintain the traffic flow. The entrance will provide enough space for an entrance lane for cars to pull up to a tollbooth. The cars will then enter the parking lot waiting area. The Ferry entrance will have fencing to separate the Ball Diamond traffic from the Ferry traffic for public safety.”

Walpole Island First Nation officials added: “The parking lot will be fenced to outline the waiting area for the outbound traffic. The extra dirt will be piled on the Ball Diamond site for their use to fill the low spots in the parking lot and other areas in the park.”
