TBT: Tartan earns ‘incredible’ score on physics exam, 2016

Uncertain if he had studied enough, a Wallaceburg District Secondary School student was pleasantly surprised to see his results after writing the prestigious Sir Isaac Newton Physics Competition exam back in June of 2016.

“To prepare for the test I studied the night before,” said RaJay Prince, Grade 12 at WDSS.

“I took my books and looked through them. On the exam, the day of the exam I’m like, ‘oh I am so going to fail this because I didn’t study hard enough’ but actually it turned out really good.”

In fact, Prince ranked in the top 3% of all the students who wrote the exam, which is hosted annually by the University of Waterloo. Of the over 3,000 students who wrote the exam from around the world, his score put him in the top 100.

“It is impressive because some of the students that write this exam come from specialized high schools in other countries and the fact that he did as well as he did is incredibly impressive,” said Laura Cumming, the physics teacher at WDSS.

“I am incredibly proud of him. He is hard working, he is dedicated, he takes his classes very seriously so I think he is a very deserving student that this happened to but all of us at WDSS are incredibly proud of him. This is an incredible achievement.”

Prince said he didn’t expect to achieve such a great score.

“A big surprise,” he said.

“I didn’t know I would reach this far.”

Prince said everything he learned in Cummings’ physics stayed with him while writing the exam.

“I think everything I learned in physics class actually stuck in my head. I can just do it,” he said.

Prince had planned to attend the University of Waterloo to study engineering.
