New subdivision proposed at the former W.T. Laing property in Wallaceburg

A plan for a new subdivision at the former W.T. Laing Public School property in Wallaceburg is in the works.

Trident Builders, a private development group, is hosting a public information centre for a proposed residential development at 800 Elizabeth Street in Wallaceburg, the location of the former Wallaceburg public school.

This developer-led community meeting will take place on Monday, October 17, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the UAW Hall, located at 88 Elm Drive South in Wallaceburg.

“This is incredible news for our community,” Wallaceburg Councillor Aaron Hall posted on social media.

“Mayor Darrin Canniff, Carmen and I had the opportunity to meet the team from Trident Builders recently. We’re all excited about their plans and grateful for their interest, commitment and investment into the community of Wallaceburg.”

In a letter sent to neighbours recently, officials with Trident Builders said it is proposed that phase one of the project will see the construction of 16 semi-detached dwellings, 32 dwelling units, with 11 dwellings, 22 units, fronting on Elizabeth Street, and the remaining five dwellings, 10 units, fronting on Lisgar Street.

Phase two, which will front on Elgin Street, proposes the construction of four townhouse dwellings containing 24 dwelling units, the developers said in the letter.

Hall said on social media the community meeting relates to the current planning applications for a zoning by-law amendment and a draft plan of subdivision.

The meeting agenda is as follows:

– Opening remarks and introductions at 6:30 p.m.

– Verbal presentation by Trident Builders

– Explanation of, and reasoning for, the Planning Act processes required

– Public comments and questions, along with responses

– Adjournment at 8 p.m.

“Councillor Carmen McGregor and myself are planning to be in attendance for the public meeting on Monday,” Hall said.

“We’re also anticipating this project being on the agenda for the November 28, 2022 Planning meeting of Council. I also know our professional staff with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent are working hard with the developers and their team to ensure a smooth and transparent process with this development.”

Hall added: “Chatham-Kent has experienced some great strides in recent years when it comes to growth, specifically the establishment of an array of housing options all across C-K. Combined with the apartment proposal on Baseline, this project on the former Laing site shows that Wallaceburg is in the thick of this momentum. I’m thrilled to see what the future holds for our community.”
