It is estimated that 50 to 60 percent of cancer survivors, treated with platinum-based chemotherapy agents (e.g., cisplatin or carboplatin) experience permanent hearing loss. Children are at higher risk for ear damage than adults because they tend to have longer courses of treatment than adults. However, adults can have disabling hearing loss as well. One in five adults treated with cisplatin were found to have resulting hearing loss that was severe to profound. Good news is that there is an effort to defeat the ear-damaging effects of chemo while preserving its tumour-fighting power. 204 Lafontaine St, Wallaceburg.
If you were treated with cisplatin or carboplatin:
👉 Get your hearing assessed
👉 Avoid excessive noise exposure
👉 Stay away from aminoglycoside antibiotics and other ototoxic drugs
