Wallaceburg’s Avery Moninger commits to the Lambton Lions Women’s Softball Program

It’s a family affair for Lambton Softball.

Team officials say Avery Moninger has officially announced her commitment to Head Coach Greg Shortt and the Lambton Women’s Softball Program for the 2023 season, and beyond.

Moninger is the fifth member of the 2023 recruiting class for Shortt and his coaching staff.

She joins the likes of Kylee Shortt of Wyoming, Ontario, Ava Thompson of Wyoming, Ontario, Bri Dugal of Ayr Ontario and Riley Brush of Wyoming, Ontario, as newcomers with the Lions.

“I’m looking forward to what lies ahead,” said Moninger, in a media release.

“I’m excited to join the Lions and continue playing softball at the collegiate level while pursuing my education.”

While at Lambton College, Moninger will be enrolled in the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway program, team officials say.

Moninger, who is from Wallaceburg, will come to Lambton College by way of Wallaceburg District Secondary School.

The recruiting pipeline between the Tartans and Lions has been strong in recent years, and Moninger is the latest student-athlete to don a Lambton uniform after graduating from WDSS, team officials added.

The addition of Moninger, who plays with the Windsor Wildcats U19 program, brings another element of versatility to the Lambton roster, the team said.

While she’s primarily a pitcher, which was a position of focus for Shortt heading into the second season of Lions Softball, Moninger can also play in the outfield, adding more depth to the outfield rotation in the process.

With her commitment to the Softball Program, it marks the second straight year that a member of the Moninger family will take to the field for the Lions.

Meagan Moninger, Avery’s sister, played for the Lions during their 2022 season.

The 2022 season was the first in the OCAA for the Lions, and while they missed out on the post-season, they had a shot at the playoffs on the final weekend of the regular season.

With that experience now under their belts, Shortt and the Lions have their sights set on a spot in the playoffs in 2023, and the addition of Moninger will go a long way in helping the group achieve their goals, team officials stated.
