29th annual Spring Powwow taking place this weekend on Walpole Island First Nation

The 29th Annual Spring Powwow is taking place this long weekend on Walpole Island First Nation.

The event will take place on May 20-21, 2023, at the Walpole Island Sports Complex Fairgrounds.

Admission is free for the general public.

Visitors can expect a weekend filled with cultural festivities, including Grand Entries on both days.

The powwow will feature the renowned Whiteye Singers as the host drum, with David White Jr. serving as the Arena Director and Pat Redmond as the Emcee.

The event will showcase captivating exhibitions such as the Youth & Adult Smoke Dance Exhibition, where participants will display their skills and regalia. Dancers, including Head Sr. Male Dancer Dennis Whiteye, Head Sr. Female Dancer Neebing Whiteye, Head Jr. Male Dancer Cole Shipman, and Head Jr. Female Dancer Miley Soney.

Special presentations include the WIFN Indian Residential School Survivor Group Eagle Staff Presentation on Saturday.

The powwow will also feature exhibitions like the Baby Pageant on Sunday, along with Inter-tribals, Hoop Dance, and Owl Dance performances.

Attendees are reminded that personal/private fundraising activities involving rattles, tables, or booths are not allowed.

The powwow committee emphasizes their commitment to honoring important issues, including the 60’s Scoop, Indian Day School, and Missing Murdered Indigenous Women.

Accommodations are available at the Wallaceburg Inn, and camping is allowed on-site, although there are no electrical or water hookups.

Emergency services will be present throughout the event to ensure the safety and well-being of attendees.
