Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue reminding the community to stay away from riverbanks

Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue is reminding CK residents to stay away from riverbanks.

The Lower Thames Conservation Authority (LTVCA) has issued an advisory outlining heavy rain in the Upper Thames River watershed yesterday, in conjunction with previous heavy rains and saturated ground conditions in the same area over the last few days, has resulted in localized flooding as well as increased runoff into the Thames River, fire officials say.

“We are remining CK residents to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions. Let’s keep everyone safe by staying away from the river and standing water,” stated Fire Chief Chris Case, in a media release.

“Although weather forecasts are not currently calling for any significant rainfall events, our crews are always standing by and ready to respond.”

The LTVCA also stated that given the nature of these convective summer storms, there is uncertainty if there will be additional input into our watershed over the next few days as the water routes down through the river’s valley, fire officials say.

Water levels should be expected to remain higher than normal for the remainder of the week and through the weekend., fire officials added.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory if necessary.
