From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
I saw a superb quote on social media recently that made me sit back and think.
Here it is: “God is still writing your story. Quit trying to steal the pen. Trust the author.”
Ooh, that’s good!
It’s tough to trust God when we are waiting for something to happen.
There is such a temptation to get up and do something.
I am not saying that taking action is a bad thing, only that it should be done after some careful thought and prayer.
I like the simple advice that King Solomon gave in Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.”
We hear a lot of advice these days urging us to “trust your gut” but that can be quite dangerous.
We can be easily influenced by our circumstances, culture, or mood, and all of these things will affect what we feel “in our gut” so to speak.
Can you imagine being on a commercial flight, soaring thousands of feet up in the skies, and then learning that your pilot decided to trust his gut instead of his instrument panel?
If you lived to tell about it you’d never board a flight with that airline ever again!
There is also great merit in seeking counsel from other trusted people.
Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
Do you have people in your life who can help you make important decisions?
This may be a teacher, a pastor, a counsellor, or even a long-time, trusted friend.
Oh, and don’t forget the wisdom found in the elders of our society.
Many times, I have been helped by the wisdom of the aged!
They are just waiting to be asked!
