Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Police are warning residents in the city’s north end to be vigilant after reports of suspicious activity that may be linked to attempted break-and-enters.
The Sarnia Police Service says one family in the Lakeshore Road area reported that masked men knocked on the door of their home on two separate occasions. In one incident, the suspects returned around 1:30 a.m. and were seen lurking around the property.
Around the same time, a nearby resident reported finding objects placed in front of their home’s entrances — a tactic police believe may have been used to gauge whether anyone was home, based on whether the objects were moved.
Both incidents occurred in the Lakeshore Road corridor, between Modeland Road and Blackwell Road.
Police say these cases may be indicators of individuals scoping out homes for potential break-ins.
“Any suspicious behaviour — especially signs that someone is testing whether a home is occupied — is important for us to know about,” the service said in a release. “This helps us adjust patrols and act proactively in areas at risk.”
Authorities are encouraging residents to report any unusual behaviour and consider taking preventative steps to secure their properties, including:
Making homes appear occupied by using timers for lights, keeping a vehicle in the driveway, and avoiding travel-related social media posts.
Reinforcing entry points with deadbolts, window locks, and smart technology.
Installing security systems and cameras, along with visible deterrents like signage or stickers.
Getting to know neighbours and participating in community watch programs.
Keeping outdoor areas well-lit and securing backyards, fences, and tools that could be used to access homes.
Anyone with information related to the recent incidents is asked to contact the Sarnia Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
