Ontario residents can fish for free across the province this weekend as part of a government initiative to mark Mother’s Day.
The province says Canadian residents will be able to enjoy recreational fishing without a licence on May 10 and 11.
“Fishing is a timeless Ontario tradition that brings people together,” said Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris in a statement. “Whether you’re an experienced angler or casting a line for the first time, fishing is a great way to connect with loved ones and enjoy everything the great outdoors has to offer.”
Harris added that events like these also help support local jobs and tourism in communities that rely on fishing.
While no licence is required during the free fishing weekend, the province notes that all conservation licence catch and size limits, sanctuaries and other fishing regulations still apply.
This weekend marks the second of four free fishing opportunities in Ontario this year. Remaining dates include Father’s Day weekend, June 14 and 15, and Family Fishing Week, June 28 to July 6.
More than one million licensed anglers in Ontario spend about $1.75 billion annually on recreational fishing, the province says.
Canadian residents fishing during free periods must carry government-issued ID showing their name and date of birth. Outside of these dates, most residents between 18 and 64 need a valid Outdoors Card and fishing licence.
Fishing licences can be purchased online at huntandfishontario.com or in person at participating ServiceOntario or authorized vendors.
