Updated flood outlook issued by the SCRCA, significant rainfall already received in Wallaceburg and Dresden

The St. Clair Region COnservation Authority has issued an updated Watershed Conditions Statement-Flood Outlook, with significant rainfall received in the southern part of the region and continued risk of possible thunderstorms.

38 mm to 68 mm of rainfall has been received in the south part of the region since Wednesday morning, with a continued risk of thunderstorms that could produce more heavy rainfall, SCRCA officials added.

“Widespread rainfall has been received today across the region, with a significant amount received in Wallaceburg and Dresden areas,” SCRCA officials say.

“Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a continued risk of thunderstorms. 12 mm to 45 mm of additional rainfall is possible tonight into Thursday. Peak hourly rainfall rate may be up to 25 mm. Local rainfall amounts could be higher due to the isolated nature of thunderstorms. If the upper ranges of the forecast are realized, total received rainfall for Wednesday to Thursday could amount to 80 mm to 110 mm.”

High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, SCRCA officials added.

“Water levels may elevate into natural floodplain areas and low-lying roadways may be impacted,” SCRCA officials say.

“Soils could be saturated from the rain and may contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues. Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks, and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water. The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely. Please continue to monitor active weather alerts from Environment Canada.”

This message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. on June 20, 2025, unless otherwise updated.
