TBT: 1930’s sugar crop harvest in Wallaceburg

In recognition of Wallaceburg’s 150th anniversary this year, the Wallaceburg & District Museum has launched a new feature on social media: ‘150 Facts, for 150 Years’.

Here is one of their recent photos and details:

“The Canada and Dominion Sugar Company opened around 1905. Sugar beets grown locally was used to make the sugar but that wasn’t the case in the beginning!

Originally, raw sugar was shipped in from Cuba to top up the local harvests.

To ensure the company’s success, D. A. Gordon made a special trip to Belgium to recruit experienced farm workers and entice them to Wallaceburg to work for the factory.”
