Suspicious fire leads to charges

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A suspicious fire on Echo Road last month has led to charges after police say investigators uncovered evidence of tampering with the home’s natural gas supply.

On Aug. 20 at 7 a.m., an off-duty police officer reported suspicious activity near a residence before seeing flames from the garage area. The officer followed a man fleeing the scene in a vehicle until it began driving unsafely.

Sarnia firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, limiting damage. When they entered the home, natural gas sensors were triggered, revealing a significant buildup. Investigators found a copper line supplying gas to a fireplace had been deliberately tampered with, and candles had been placed inside the home in areas where gas was leaking.

Police said their investigation included a review of the home’s ownership, mortgage and insurance details. The homeowner was later arrested and charged with multiple offences, including arson and mischief endangering life. He was remanded into custody following a bail hearing.
