Quick action by Chatham-Kent officer saves infant’s life

A Chatham-Kent police officer is being credited with saving the life of a two-week-old infant following a medical emergency on September 23.

Police say Sgt. Fraser Leontowicz responded to a 911 call around 3:25 p.m. and arrived within two minutes to find the baby unresponsive. He immediately began lifesaving measures, and within moments the infant regained consciousness and became alert.

Emergency Communications Operators coordinated the response while paramedics arrived shortly after, continuing care before transporting the baby to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance hospital. The infant is expected to make a full recovery.

The child’s mother thanked police for their quick response, saying, “Within minutes, I had police officers at my home, ready to help. They were awesome.”

Police say the incident underscores the value of training, teamwork and preparedness among emergency services.
