Enbridge Gas considering Chatham office closure; mayor vows to fight for local presence

Multiple published reports indicate Enbridge Gas is considering closing or relocating its Chatham office as part of a broader review of its facilities and operations.

The company has stated it regularly assesses its real estate strategy to support their team and evolving operational needs and that the potential closure is one option being explored.

No final decisions have been made and no job losses are expected, Enbridge officials have stated.

Mayor Darrin Canniff

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff issued a statement Thursday expressing both concern and commitment to keeping Enbridge in the community.

“Enbridge has been part of our community for over a century, contributing not only through employment and investment, but also through meaningful support of local initiatives and organizations. Their presence has been, and still is, a valued part of Chatham-Kent’s growth and success,” the Mayor stated.

“Since their merger in 2019, both Council and I have been working with the leadership team at Enbridge to preserve a strong presence in Chatham-Kent. Our goal is to ensure that Enbridge knows how much they mean to our community and to express our strong desire to see their continued presence in Chatham-Kent.”

Mayor Canniff added: “I have reached out directly to senior leadership at Enbridge and will be working with them to better understand the reasons behind this consideration and to explore every possible avenue to keep them here. I want to highlight the fact that nothing has been finalized yet and both Council and I will fight to keep their legacy alive in our community for years to come.”

The Sydenham Current has reached out to Enbridge officials for comment, but have yet to receive a response.

We’ll provide more details when they become available.
