Walpole Island leader to speak at Chatham-Kent Public Library during Treaties Recognition Week

Chatham-Kent Public Library will welcome guest speaker Dean M. Jacobs on Tuesday, November 4, for a public talk exploring the history and ongoing significance of pre-Confederation treaties between the British Imperial Crown and the ancestors of Walpole Island First Nation.

Jacobs, who has dedicated more than five decades to protecting the natural and cultural heritage of Walpole Island, will also discuss the path toward Truth and Reconciliation through mutual trust and respect.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Chatham Branch, 120 Queen St. Light refreshments will be served and admission is free.

Treaties Recognition Week runs from November 2 to 8 and represents one of many steps on Ontario’s journey of healing and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

The week was established in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, encouraging greater awareness and understanding of treaties and their lasting importance.
