Individual charged after funds discovered missing at Moraviantown First Nation

OPP officials allege: The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a substantial financial loss reported at Delaware Nation at Moraviantown.

Police say the Eelŭnaapéewi Lahkéewiit First Nation Police Service responded to a report of fraud at the Moraviantown First Nation band office at about 9 a.m. on Feb. 7, 2025, and requested assistance from OPP investigators.

The investigation determined that between Oct. 29, 2018, and Dec. 31, 2024, cheques totalling more than $600,000 were allegedly forged and deposited into the bank account of a former Moraviantown First Nation employee.

As a result, a 41-year-old individual from Moraviantown has been charged with fraud over $5,000, use of a forged document and 14 counts of forgery under the Criminal Code.

The accused was arrested and released on an undertaking on Dec. 17, 2025, and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Chatham on Feb. 4, 2026.

Police note that fraud continues to evolve and affects individuals and businesses across Canada, often relying on deception and misrepresentation to exploit trust. Authorities encourage the public to learn how to recognize, reject and report fraudulent activity.
